Welcome, Thank you for volunteering

Welcome to Dunbartonshire District Scouts, hopefully you've been sent the link to this page after completing your first session - or your first few sessions - volunteering within Dunbartonshire.

Thanks for giving it a go. We hope you've enjoyed your time so far! We would like to say a big thank you for taking on your new role in Scouting. You are joining the most successful youth movement the world has ever seen! This webpage is designed to provide you with some useful information to get you started.

Scouting is about everyday people working as leaders and supporters in their communities, giving young people confidence, a sense of purpose, life values & outdoor skills that are hard to find anywhere else.

Whichever role you are taking on, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends & give something back to your community. You will be helping young people gain Skills For Life and have amazing adventures as part of the UK's largest youth organisation.

Becoming a member

We want to ensure we find the right fit for you in Scouting, and knowing more about your interests and skills is definitely helpful. You may already have already completed this section, which is great; but if not we ask you to provide some basic information about yourself so that we can get you setup and registered in Compass. This is the Scouts online membership system for adult volunteers.

The majority of volunteers in Scouting also require a disclosure, and we will request this on your behalf free of charge. Your manager or local volunteer lead will help you check your documents and submit your application.

Everyone here is to support you, and you can always ask questions if you are unsure about which documents to use. Don't worry, we've had plenty of practice and are on hand to help.

Our number one priority is keeping people safe, that also includes you. The disclosure is an important part of making safe appointment decisions. It's about making sure that we protect vulnerable groups, only allowing appropriate people to work with them; including young people.

Have your welcome meeting / appointment meeting

To welcome you to the wider team, you'll be invited to a welcome meeting (also known as a appointment meeting) with other volunteers from within Dunbartonshire Scouts. This is an informal conversation where you'll find out a bit more about Scouts, and you can ask questions.

This meeting is also a good chance for you to have a discussion regarding your new role and to check you are comfortable with it, the tasks your taking on & the responsibilities involved. There'll be an opportunity to talk through our key policies and understand the Scout Promise

This conversation usually lasts between 30-45 minutes and can be held either face-to-face or online. You'll be sent an email inviting you to the welcome meeting; keep your eyes peeled! Remember your local volunteer team is there to support you through this journey; feel free to ask questions.

That's it!

Start your learning

All our new volunteers complete some learning with us when they join.

If you'd like to get ahead, we've put together some e-learning to complete from the comfort of your own home:

If you are curious to know more about which training modules we offer to our volunteers, check the Module Matrix.

Whether you call it a neckie, a neckerchief or a scarf, every group within Dunbartonshire District has one that is unique to them. It gives the group their identity and whether you are running a small activity or a large camp with hundreds of scouts you can easily identify your young people & adults. (Did you know your neckie can be used as a sling for a broken arm, bandana, blind fold and much more) The district team have a neckie, this is a dark blue with a yellow and red border and it hosts the district logo on the rear. The district team are always happy to help whether you have any questions or just want a chat! Depending on your role there is a uniform, this includes a beige coloured shirt worn with a neckie. You can purchase the shirt from Glasgow Scout Shop or the UK Scout Store. (Speak to your leadership team as they may already have a stock or might be able to assist)

Supporting you and other volunteers within Dunbartonshire are the District Team. The team are made up of volunteers and try to support where they can. Find out who the District Team are.
